What actually decides the artificial grass carpet price

Five things move the number, and only the first two are usually advertised.

• Pile height (thickness). Measured in millimetres — 25mm, 35mm, 40mm, 50mm. Taller pile needs more yarn, so the price rises with every step up.
• Size of the piece. Grass is sold by the running length off a 6.5 ft wide roll. A 6.5 × 5 ft piece and a 6.5 × 12 ft piece are the same product at very different totals.
• Density. Two 40mm grasses can feel completely different. Density is how many stitches are packed per square metre. Low-density grass looks thin and flattens within months.
• Yarn and colour build. Better grass uses a three-tone or four-tone blend — green, olive and a brown thatch layer — so it reads as real lawn instead of plastic turf.

How much grass do you actually need?

This is where most people over-order. Our rolls are 6.5 feet wide, and you choose the length. So the real question is how many running feet you need, not how many square feet.

Measure your space, then work it out like this:

• Balcony 6.5 ft × 8 ft — one piece of 6.5 × 8. No joins, no wastage.
• Balcony 5 ft × 10 ft — order 6.5 × 10 and trim 1.5 ft off the width. Grass cuts cleanly with a sharp blade from the back.
• Terrace 13 ft × 10 ft — that is two pieces of 6.5 × 10 laid side by side. Keep the pile direction the same on both, or the join will be visible.

Always add three to four inches on each side if the area has an uneven edge. Trimming down is easy; adding back is not.

25mm: the budget and décor choice

Short pile, flat finish, easy to cut into shapes. It works for doormats, small balcony strips, wall art, shop displays and event décor. It is also the most forgiving option if you plan to lift and re-lay the grass frequently. What it will not do is feel plush underfoot.

35mm: the everyday balcony pick

A noticeable step up in softness for a small step up in cost. If your balcony gets regular use — morning chai, kids playing, pets — this is usually the sweet spot between price and comfort.

40mm: the most popular choice

This is what most of our terrace and garden customers end up buying. At 40mm the blades stand tall enough to look like a maintained lawn from a distance, and the density is high enough to bounce back after furniture is moved.

50mm: the premium lawn look

The tallest pile we stock. Walking on a well-made 50mm grass feels closest to a real lawn, and in photographs the difference is obvious. Choose it for large terraces, rooftop lounges and landscaping where the grass is the main visual element.

The grass itself is the main expense, but plan for these too:

• Fixing material. Double-sided tape for small balconies, or adhesive and seam tape where two pieces join. On most balconies the weight of the grass plus tape at the edges is enough.
• Surface preparation. Grass follows the surface underneath. Fill deep cracks and sweep away grit first, or every bump will show through.

3. Ask about UV stabilisation if the area gets direct sun for more than four or five hours. Without it, colour fades unevenly.
4. Check the backing. It should show drainage perforations and feel firm, not papery.

Higher density grass has more fibres sharing the load, so no single blade takes the full beating.
