Carpet Size Guide India: Which Rug Size Actually Fits Your Room?

Hand tufted carpet showing standard room size proportions

Every week someone messages us with the same worry: "I liked a carpet online, but I don't know if the size is right." That is a fair concern, because a rug looks completely different in a photograph than it does on your floor. This carpet size guide gives you the numbers, the layouts and a simple test so you can order with confidence.

We stock carpets from 2×6 ft runners to 9×12 ft room-size pieces, so the sizes below are the ones you will actually be choosing between.

Quick answer

Use 6×9 ft for a standard living room with a 3+2 sofa, 5×7 ft or 4×6 ft for compact rooms and bedsides, 8×11 ft for large halls, and 2×6 to 2×8 ft runners for passages and kitchens. Bedrooms usually need the carpet to extend at least 18–24 inches beyond the bed on the sides you walk on.

Carpet size guide in practice: a correctly sized rug under a seating group
This carpet size guide starts where the mistakes do: measure the furniture, not the room.

Standard carpet sizes and where each one works

Size (ft) Typical use Good to know
3×5 Bedside, entryway, study chair Accent size — too small for a sofa set
4×6 Compact living room, single bed Works as a floating rug under a centre table
5×7 / 5×8 Standard living room, queen bedside The most ordered size in Indian flats
6×8 / 6×9 3+2 sofa set, master bedroom Front legs of furniture sit comfortably on it
7×10 / 8×11 Large hall, L-shaped sofa Allows the all-legs-on layout
9×12 Open-plan living and dining Check doorway clearance before ordering
2×6 to 2×12 Passage, kitchen, bedside runner Leave 4–6 inches of floor on each side

Living room: size by seating, not by floor area

The mistake is measuring the room. Measure the seating arrangement instead, then add a margin.

  1. Measure the width of your sofa wall, including side chairs.
  2. Subtract about a foot so the rug does not touch the walls.
  3. Choose the nearest standard size at or above that width.

For a typical 3-seater plus two chairs, that calculation lands on 6×9 ft almost every time. If your sofa is against a wall and the room is narrow, 5×8 ft is the safer pick. Full layout advice is in our living room carpet range, where each size is listed on the product page.

Bedroom: three placements that work

Under the bed, extending outwards

The most comfortable option: the carpet starts below the bedside tables and extends past the foot of the bed. For a queen bed you need 8×11 ft; for a king, 9×12 ft. Your feet land on carpet every morning, which is the entire point.

Two-thirds under the bed

Start the carpet just below the pillows so it covers the lower two-thirds of the bed and extends on three sides. A 6×9 ft carpet handles a queen bed nicely, and it costs less than the full-size option.

Runners on both sides

In compact bedrooms, skip the big rug and place a 2×6 ft runner on each side. It is the cheapest way to get warm floors where you actually step. Browse carpet runners for this approach, or the bedroom carpet range for full sizes.

The newspaper test

Before ordering, tape newspaper sheets on the floor to the exact carpet size and live with it for a day. Walk around it, pull the chairs out, open the door. This single step prevents almost every size regret we hear about.

Dining room: the rule nobody mentions

Use this carpet size guide the way our showroom staff do: find your room, then check how the furniture should sit.

Size Room How it sits
3 × 5 ft Bedside, entryway Beside the bed, or just inside the door
5 × 7 ft Small living room, 10 × 12 ft Front legs of the sofa resting on it
6 × 9 ft Standard living room, 12 × 15 ft Sofa and chair front legs on it
8 × 10 ft Large living room, queen bed All furniture legs fully on it
9 × 12 ft Big hall, king bed The whole seating group sits inside

A dining carpet must be large enough that chairs stay on it when pulled out. Measure your table, then add 24 inches on every side. A six-seater table of roughly 3×6 ft therefore needs about 7×10 ft of carpet.

If that sounds oversized, it is — deliberately. A chair that catches the carpet edge every time someone sits down becomes a daily irritation, and it wears the binding out quickly.

Round carpets: how to size them

Treat a round carpet by its diameter and imagine the square it sits inside. A 6 ft round needs roughly the same clear floor as a 6×6 ft square. Round rugs work best under round tables, in reading corners, in kids' rooms and in entry foyers where a rectangle would look rigid. See the round carpet collection for available diameters.

Passages, kitchens and stairs

For a corridor, leave 4 to 6 inches of visible floor on each side of the runner — a runner that touches both walls looks like failed wall-to-wall carpeting. For kitchens, a 2×6 ft runner in front of the counter is usually enough, and a flat weave is easier to wipe than a shag.

Common sizing mistakes we see

  • Buying one size too small. By far the most frequent. When in doubt, size up.
  • Forgetting door clearance. A thick carpet can stop a door from opening. Measure the gap under the door before buying high pile.
  • Ignoring the walking path. A carpet that ends exactly where people walk creates a trip edge. Either cover the path fully or keep well clear of it.
  • Matching the rug to the room rather than the furniture. Rooms are rarely regular; furniture groupings are.
  • Skipping the rug pad. A pad stops slipping, adds cushioning and reduces wear. It costs little and matters a lot.

Converting sizes: feet, inches and centimetres

Indian listings usually use feet. If you are working from a floor plan in centimetres, these conversions cover the common sizes:

  • 4×6 ft ≈ 122 × 183 cm
  • 5×7 ft ≈ 152 × 213 cm
  • 6×9 ft ≈ 183 × 274 cm
  • 8×11 ft ≈ 244 × 335 cm
  • 9×12 ft ≈ 274 × 366 cm

Hand-made carpets can vary by an inch or two from the stated size, which is normal for the craft and not a defect. If your space is genuinely tight, tell us the exact clearance and we will confirm before dispatch.

Odd-shaped rooms and open-plan layouts

Not every home is a neat rectangle, and this is where the standard size chart stops helping.

For an L-shaped living and dining space, treat it as two zones rather than one floor. A 6×9 ft carpet under the seating and a separate flat-weave under the dining table reads far better than one enormous rug trying to cover both. It is also cheaper, and easier to clean the dining side.

For a narrow, long room, avoid the instinct to buy a square. A 5×8 ft or 6×9 ft carpet follows the room's proportion and makes it feel deliberate. Two runners placed parallel can work in very narrow spaces.

For a room with a projecting corner or pillar, measure to the obstruction and size down to the next standard option. Custom-cutting a machine-made carpet is possible, but the cut edge needs binding or it will fray.

How size affects price

Carpet pricing scales with area, not length, so each step up costs more than it looks. Going from 5×7 ft to 6×9 ft is a 38 per cent jump in area. From 6×9 ft to 8×11 ft is another 63 per cent.

That has a practical consequence worth planning for. If your budget is fixed and the correct size pushes you past it, drop a construction level rather than a size — a simpler weave in the right dimensions will always look better than a finer weave that is visibly too small. In our range, solid carpets and machine-made designs give you the size you need at a lower rate, and hand-tufted pieces are the step up when the budget allows.

Shipping, handling and doorways

Large carpets arrive rolled, and the roll is rigid. Before ordering a 9×12 ft piece, check that your building's lift or staircase can take a roll of that length. It is a small thing that occasionally becomes a large problem on delivery day.

Once a carpet is laid, give it a few days. Roll creases settle on their own, and a carpet that looks slightly wavy on day one is usually flat by the end of the week. Placing furniture on the corners speeds this up.

Keep this carpet size guide open while you measure. Write down the open floor your furniture sits around, in feet, then come back to the carpet size guide table above — the size stops being a guess.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common carpet size in Indian homes?

5×7 ft and 6×9 ft are the two most ordered sizes. They suit the standard 3+2 sofa arrangement found in most flats.

What size carpet do I need for a queen bed?

8×11 ft if you want the carpet under the bed and extending on three sides, or 6×9 ft for the two-thirds placement. Two 2×6 ft runners are the compact alternative.

How much floor should show around a carpet?

Aim for 8 to 24 inches of visible floor between the carpet edge and the wall. Less than that and the rug reads as botched wall-to-wall carpeting.

Can a carpet be too big for a room?

Yes. If it runs wall to wall on any side, or blocks a door, it is too big. Leave a visible border of floor on at least two sides.

Do carpet sizes vary from the listed measurement?

Hand-made carpets can differ by an inch or two, which is inherent to hand finishing. Machine-made pieces are closer to exact.

What size runner for a kitchen?

2×6 ft covers most kitchen counters; 2×8 ft or longer suits galley kitchens and long passages. Keep 4 to 6 inches of floor visible on each side.
